Synchronize your pictures with PictSync

February 19th, 2011

PictSync is an easy to use Mac OS X app which will allow you to synchronize your online and offline pictures with ease. PictSync defaults to a safe set (no syncing) but it’s not terribly useful if you don’t sync so here is where you change that.

PictSync contains three main views

Sync your pictureThe left mode is the sync view and shows details on the sync as well as how many photos are matched, etc.

The middle one (the ‘eye’ icon) contains a table for viewing your photos — you can see which ones are matched up, which ones didn’t and for the matched ones you can individually select which direction they sync as well turn off syncing all together (note that this is for one at a time — if you want to turn off syncing in a global sense go to preferences)

Finally the hammer is a console view — normally you can ignore but it may contain some useful diagnostics.

Easily synchronize your online & offline picturesPictSync

  1. Link this to your flickr account and make sure you have the correct iPhoto library in preferences (it defaults to the one in the pictures folder)
  2. Hit changes and go into the browser after it’s done (middle button on view tab item) and look at the matches it found and the synchronization steps it wants to do. Do they look reasonable?
  3. Go into preferences — Turn on syncing and select what you want to sync, then go to the browser (the little ‘eye’ icon) and look at what changes PictSync want’s to do — is it doing a reasonable job at the titles (you can also try changing the titles in either flickr or iPhoto and then verifying it notices the changes. Note that for iPhoto it may take a few minutes as iPhoto has to push the change out)
  4. Go into preferences and look at syncing description & tags — do they look reasonable?

Knowledge About The Video Encoding—Codecs, Formats, Containers And Settings

January 21st, 2011

video_encoding_codecs_formats_containers_settings_by_canon

Summary:

video encoding is the process of taking your original movie, as recorded by your camcorder, mobile phone or webcam, and preparing it for delivery in a digital formataccording to specific technical standards.

  • What is video encoding
  • Video file formats and containers
  • Comparison of video codecs
  • Encoding settings for Internet video publishing
  • Video publishing settings for YouTube

From .WMV to .MOV and from .AVI to .MP4, this guide presents the best information available online on what you need to know about the use and characteristics of the major video file formats, containers and relative codecs.

When you video encode a clip, you are saving your video into a specific “format” much like you can do with a Word document or a digital image. A Word document can be encoded in .RTF or in .TXT, just like an image can be encoded in .JPG or .BMP formats.

Obviously, different types of encodings are good for different applications and devices.

Broadcasting, live streaming, burning to DVD and archiving all require different video encoding parameters while your computer browser, an iPhone and your gaming console have all different expectations when it comes to playing back video files. And this is why knowing a bitabout video encoding, video file formats and containers is quite important if you intend to publish and distribute digital video.

In the video universe it is easy to get lost, as the formats, codecs and file containers generate a universe of possibilities and variables that are initially not easy to understand.

If you want to upload and publish a video on YouTube, for instance, you would have to choose specific encoding settings and file formats, whereas your choice would be different if your video clips are to burned on a DVD.

As an online publisher you may already be familiar with some of these issues, but as new technologies like  HTML5 and  WebM are starting to make inroads, you are going to need to better understand the key differences and the pros and cons that such different formats entail for you.

To help you achieve this goal, the MasterNewMedia research team has prepared a comprehensive guide to bring together all of the “fundamentals” you need to master to fully understand the basics of video encoding, specifically:

  • What is video encoding
  • Video file formats and containers
  • Comparison of video codecs
  • Encoding settings for Internet video publishing
  • Video publishing settings for YouTube

Sync Your iPhoto Libraries with iPhotoSync

January 19th, 2011

Part 1. Sync your iPhoto Libraries between Macs

Sync iphoto libraryiPhotoSync is an easy to use tool which synchronizes the photos in your iPhoto libraries — it automatically retrieves “missing” photos from other Macs that you specify.
iPhotoSync NEVER deletes photos — it only adds. So it’s very safe.

Find the Missing Photos and Videos

Not sure which photos and videos are on which computer?
Launch iPhotoSync on 2 Macs and you’ll see which photos and videos the other Mac has that you don’t already have:

Sync your iPhoto

Two modes to sync your iPhoto libraries

Manual Mode
Browse the photos and videos and retrieve the ones you want. iPhotoSync copies them from the other computer and puts them in your iPhoto Library’s “Auto Import” folder; iPhoto imports them the next time you launch. iPhotoSync doesn’t modify your iPhoto Library database directly so it’s very safe.

Automatic Mode
If you want to receive photos and videos from another computer without having to go check for them, check “Automatically import”:

Sync iphoto library

Choose to import all new photos and videos, or only from albums you choose.
In automatic mode, iPhotoSync’s “agent” program monitors the other computer and automatically retrieves new photos and videos as they become available. You can choose to import all new photos and videos, or only the new photos and videos in selected albums.

Compared to iPhoto’s “Library Sharing” Feature

iPhoto’s built-in sharing feature lets you view photos in another computer’s iPhoto Library, and even copy them to your own iPhoto Library, but:
•    iPhoto must be running on the other computer for it to work
•    iPhoto doesn’t tell you which of the other computer’s photos you already have
•    copying is a manual process
•    it doesn’t allow viewing and copying of videos, only photos

Note: iPhotoSync does not copy titles, Events, Albums or other metadata. It only copies new photos and videos from other computers and puts them in your iPhoto Library’s “Auto Import” folder for iPhoto to import.

Part 2: Sync your photos among iPod/iPad/iPhone and Mac

If you wanto to sync photos on your iDevices like iPod, iPad, iPhone etc. back to Mac, you can use SyncPod to be your assistant which is a professional Mac app for making it easy to transfer songs, movies, TV shows, playlist, photos etc. from iPod/iPhone/iPad to your Mac and into iTunes.  Moreover, this powerful transfer also allows to copy your media files from Mac to iPod/iPhone/iPad, even if the device (except iPhone) is not synced with the iTunes library. In addition, it features support for directly copying DVD movies and virtually any format video&audio to Apple devices.

The smart Mac app SyncPod works like this:

  1. Open SyncPod and Connect device;
  2. Find media files you want to copy:
In a second, your iPod contents and iTunes library will appear in two side by side windows, ready to play. Check “hide duplicate contents on both sides” on the left corner of the interface, so that you can easily find the missing contents and transfer to iTunes quickly.
  3. Drag contents from device to iTunes/Mac:
You can now drag music (individual or albums, playlists, artists, genres), movies, TV shows, photos, e-book, and audio books in “iPod window” on the left over to “iTunes Window” or somewhere on your Mac-just click the Folder tab.

ControllerMate

January 7th, 2011

ControllerMate
ControllerMate is a controller programming tool that allows you to customize the behavior of your HID devices — keyboards, keypads, mice, trackballs, joysticks, gamepads, throttles, among others. ControllerMate’s philosophy is to be as flexible as possible, to provide a set of basic programming tools, and to allow the user to combine those tools in an endless variety of ways.

Controller programming — A new approach

ControllerMate programming is done in two ways: combining various building blocks to create the function that you want to perform, or by creating a controller configuration for your particular device. Building blocks are little nuggets of functionality which can be customized and combined with other building blocks to create complex functions. Controller configurations allow you to redefine the default behavior of your keyboard and mouse devices.

Building functions, one block at a time

ControllerMate building blocks are used to add functionality to the controls on devices. Currently, there are more ControllerMatethan 50 different kinds of building blocks. Each type performs a different function. There are blocks which represent device controls (buttons, axes, hatswitches) which are used to trigger a function. There are blocks which perform keyboard functions (typing text, simulating keyboard keys). There are blocks which perform mouse functions (moving the cursor, simulating a mouse button or scroll wheel). There are yet other blocks which exist just to allow building blocks to be combined in interesting ways using logic (AND, OR, NOT, XOR).
ControllerMate 3

Rewired drivers

Controller configurations can be used to change the default behavior of keyboard and mouse devices. All buttons on keyboards have some default function or another. Most are useful — some are not. A controller configuration allows you to make one button on a keyboard act like another, or turn it off buttons entirely. (Q: What good is a button which does nothing? A: It is still available to be used with building blocks.) In addition to redefining buttons, a controller configuration for a mouse can have a custom acceleration curve. This curve can be one of the standard curves, or can be one entirely of your own creation.

Virtual devices

ControllerMate allows you to create virtual mouse, tablet and joystick devices. These are devices that are created ControllerMate 4entirely by you, but applications will see them just like the devices that you have plugged into your computer. Using ControllerMate’s building blocks and controller configurations, you can control every move that these virtual devices make. Among other uses, you can use a virtual device to turn a joystick into a full-featured mouse.

ControllerMate for X–keys

ControllerMate 5Owners of X–keys devices from P. I. Engineering have the option of using ControllerMate for X–keys, a custom version of ControllerMate that is compatible only with X–keys devices. ControllerMate for X–keys can be downloaded for free and does not require registration. Users of ControllerMate for X–keys can upgrade to the full version of ControllerMate while keeping all of their programming.

Out of Sight, Never Out of Reach

ControllerMate includes a small helper application which runs in the background. It monitors your controllers and ControllerMate 6performs your programming when the ControllerMate application is not running. Once you have finished editing your programming, quit the ControllerMate application and the background application takes over. No graphics, no user interface, no unnecessary processor cycles.
