MenuEverywhere

November 8th, 2010

MenuEverywhere was made to fulfill the need for better accessibility to menu items when using more than one display or a very large monitor.

By simply providing an application’s menu on any of its windows and on any screen, MenuEverywhere gives you immediate access to the most familiar way of commanding programs: menu selections. There is no need to fumble around trying to figure out and remember keyboard shortcuts; the menu’s always right their by your side, at your beck and call. What’s more, since the menu is in the immediate vicinity of the currently active window, you never need to shift your focus from your work to another area of the screen or another display.

large monitor? dual-monitor? multi-monitor?

Accessing the Menu Using MenuEverywhere

The first way is via a horizontal menubar with all the menu buttons showing. The menubar is added to the currently active window. Any menu button that exceeds the width of the window is shown in a pop-up button added to the end of the horizontal menubar. The menubar may be set to the right of the green zoom button or above the window’s frame.

The second way is with a ‘Menu’ button. The button can be optionally made to appear only when the mouse is over it so as not to take any screen real estate. Its position can be set above the traffic light controls or to the right of the green zoom button.

The third way is using a hotkey, popping up the menu at the current mouse location.

NEW FEATURE: SCREEN-TOP MENUBAR

The fourth way is using a screen-top menubar on all non-primary screens. The menubar can be made to hide automatically, similar to that in fullscreen apps.

Compatibility

MenuEverywhere works with most applications. Applications that utilize non-standard menu items or windows may not work. See FAQ for list of known issues.

SlimmerTimer

October 20th, 2010

Slimmer Timer is a simple standalone application for Mac and PC which interacts with slimtimer.com. slimtimer.com is a web app which provides a simple way to track the time spent on various tasks. As a freelancer, I find this app invaluable for keeping tabs on how much time I spend on what projects. The one annoying thing is that you have to keep a browser window open at all times to track your time.

With Slimmer Timer you have an application which exposes the most basic functionality of Slim Timer (recording time spent on tasks) in a simple standalone application which you can leave running all the time. Accidentally closing (or crashing) your browser won’t interrupt your timing.

Here is what it looks like in action:

Slimmer Timer in action

As you can see, it is very minimal and simple. You select what you are currently doing from a list of your active tasks and press play to start recording your time. Or you can create new tasks and mark tasks as completed. You still use the slimtimer.com website to tag your tasks and to view reports on how you spent your time.

Download

You can download SlimmerTimer for PC or for Mac. Simply unzip the downloaded file to a folder of your choice and double click on the application (“SlimmerTimer.exe” on PC or “SlimmerTimer” on Mac).
