Turn on iMessage

Believer it or not, not all people know how to turn on iMessage. To use iMessage to communicate with international friends who also have an iPhone, turn it on as this: Open Settings app, go to Messages and tap on iMessage. Also turn on the Send Read Receipts switch. This way, your friend know whether or not you are typing a message and whether or not you have read a message.

Note that iMesage will only work if you have updated your device to iOS 5.

Using Wi-Fi

Sending message can also cause free to skyrocket. If you’re using iMessage abroad, make sure that you are connected to Wi-Fi, rather than an internet data plan.

Cancel Send as SMS

iMessage distinguish iMessage from SMS message by color. If those blue text bubbles suddenly turn green, that means your iPhone is starting to send an SMS messages. It will charge you a lot. Fortunately, you can cancel it by going into Messages > General Settings, and turning off Send As SMS option.
